The last man standing in a sector of nightmares.

Nathan D'Arcy

Nathan D'Arcy is a former UNN officer turned security guard aboard the starship Von Braun, introduced in *System Shock 2* (1999). Lore & Background

Nathan D'Arcy was a security officer assigned to the starship Von Braun, a UNN vessel on a routine mission before the Many began infecting and assimilating the crew. His audio diaries capture a man unraveling in real time: he barricades doors, issues evacuation orders that go unanswered, and eventually realizes that his own colleagues are turning into shambling hybrids. He documented his attempts to secure key areas and protect survivors, but his final entries are punctuated by gunfire and the wet sounds of the Many breaking through. His story is a microcosm of the ship's fall—competence crushed by an incomprehensible horror.

In Their Own Story

The lights flickered in the med bay as Nathan D'Arcy checked his pistol for the third time. The screams from the corridor had faded, replaced by a wet, chittering sound. He keyed his log: 'Day... I've lost count. The Many has taken engineering. I'm the last one standing in this sector. If anyone hears this, find the bridge. Don't trust the machines.' A thud against the door made him raise his weapon. He knew he wouldn't make it out, but he could leave a record for whoever came next. That record—scratched, breathless, and punctuated by static—is the only reason anyone remembers his name.

Reader's Guide

Nathan D'Arcy is a non-player character (NPC) encountered primarily through audio logs and a single, grim in-person meeting in the Engineering section. His logs are scattered across the Von Braun, each one a step deeper into his personal apocalypse. They contain not only lore but tactical insights—he notes which corridors are death traps, where the Many cluster, and how to bypass security locks. Players who collect all his logs will hear his voice crack, his resolve fray, and finally fall silent. His body lies in a sealed room, pistol empty, surrounded by the corpses of the infected he took down with him. To fully experience his arc, explore every corner of the ship; his story is told in the spaces between the gunfire.
