The Heat System is a direct consequence of the advanced but imperfect technology aboard Citadel Station. SHODAN's control over the station's systems has made thermal regulation a constant struggle, as she can manipulate environmental temperatures or sabotage cooling systems. The player's energy weapons, while powerful, generate significant waste heat that must be dissipated through the station's limited infrastructure or by the weapon's own cooling fins. In-universe, the Heat System reflects the harsh reality of using experimental military hardware in a decaying, hostile environment. The Laser Rapier, for example, is a melee weapon that can slice through armor but will overheat with prolonged use, forcing the hacker to retreat or risk a temporary disablement. Similarly, the Ion Pulse Rifle's rapid-fire mode generates heat that can cause the weapon to jam if not managed. This mechanic also ties into the game's survival horror elements, as overheating results in weapon malfunction or damage to the player, not enemy attraction or SHODAN alerts. The Heat System is a resource management mechanic that tracks the thermal buildup of energy weapons and certain equipment. Each weapon has a heat meter that increases with each shot or sustained use. When the meter reaches maximum, the weapon overheats, causing a temporary disablement or, in some cases, damage to the player. The system encourages tactical play: players must balance aggressive fire with cooldown periods, or use coolant items to instantly reduce heat. Heat is also affected by environmental factors. Areas with high ambient temperature, such as near reactor cores or in fire-damaged sections, cause weapons to heat up faster. Conversely, cold areas or using station ventilation can speed up cooldown. The player's own cybernetic modules can generate heat, too—overclock your leg boosters in a hot corridor, and you might trigger a system-wide spike that leaves your gun stuttering at the worst possible moment.
