Parry & Riposte

Parry & Riposte is a high-risk, high-reward defensive mechanic in the System Shock series, most prominently featured in the 2023 remake of System Shock. It allows the player to deflect an incoming melee attack from an enemy, then immediately counter with a powerful strike. This mechanic serves as a skillful alternative to simply blocking or dodging, rewarding precise timing with significant damage output and crowd control.

Lore & Background

In the depths of Citadel Station, the Hacker is often outnumbered and outgunned. The Parry & Riposte technique is not a formally taught skill but a brutal improvisation born from necessity. It reflects the Hacker's resourcefulness, turning an enemy's momentum against them. The mechanic is a physical manifestation of the station's unforgiving nature: one mistake can be fatal, but a perfectly timed action can turn the tide of any close-quarters encounter.

In Their Own Story

The maintenance corridor hummed with failing lights. A mutant, its cybernetic arm crackling with energy, lunged with a rusted pipe—a wild, overhand swing meant to pulp bone. The Hacker didn't flinch. At the last instant, they raised their lead pipe, catching the mutant's weapon with a sharp *clang* that rang down the corridor like a bell. The mutant's arm recoiled, its guard flung wide, its chest exposed. Before it could reset, the Hacker's pipe slammed into its temple with a wet crack. The mutant crumpled, twitching once. The Hacker stepped over the body, already scanning for the next threat, the rhythm of the station's violence now a familiar pulse.

Reader's Guide

Parry & Riposte is a timing-based defensive action available when the player wields a melee weapon. To execute it, the player must press the attack button just as an enemy's melee strike is about to land. A successful parry will deflect the attack and briefly stagger the enemy, leaving them vulnerable. Immediately pressing the attack button again triggers the Riposte—a guaranteed, high-damage counterattack that often kills lesser enemies outright. This mechanic is not a universal solution. It only works against melee attacks; projectiles and energy blasts cannot be parried. The timing window is tight, requiring practice to master. However, its value is immense. It conserves ammunition, which is scarce on Citadel Station, and allows the player to control the pace of melee combat against groups of enemies. A skilled player can parry multiple attackers in sequence, turning a desperate fight into a controlled execution. Why it matters: In a game where resources are limited and enemies are relentless, Parry & Riposte offers a way to conserve health and ammo while dealing decisive damage. It transforms the Hacker from a fragile survivor into a formidable close-quarters combatant, rewarding players who learn enemy attack patterns and timing.
