Laser SMG

A rapid-fire laser submachine gun that turns Citadel Station's corridors into a wall of searing light.

Laser SMG

The Laser SMG is a submachine gun–class energy weapon in the System Shock franchise, most prominently featured in System Shock 2 (1999, Irrational Games / Looking Glass Studios). It occupies the middle rung of the SMG weapon progression, sitting above the basic kinetic SMG and below the Plasma SMG, and represents a significant step up in raw fire rate and energy damage for the player navigating the hostile corridors of Citadel Station.

As a submachine gun, it is designed for close-to-mid-range suppression, delivering a rapid stream of laser bolts that shred through lesser enemies and chip away at heavier threats. It is not the most powerful weapon in the game, but its combination of high rate of fire, manageable recoil, and moderate energy cost makes it a reliable workhorse during the mid-game stretch of the campaign.

Lore & Background

The Laser SMG is one of several energy-based armaments developed for the security and military personnel stationed aboard Citadel Station, a massive orbital research platform. Unlike the kinetic SMG that relies on high-velocity slugs, the Laser SMG channels focused photon energy through a compact emitter array, producing a continuous stream of superheated bolts that vaporise organic tissue on contact. Its design favours sustained fire over single-shot power, making it ideal for the close-quarters combat that dominates the station's narrow maintenance tunnels and server rooms.

Within the broader armory of Citadel Station, the Laser SMG represents a mid-tier upgrade path. Security officers who have outgrown the standard SMG but have not yet earned access to the Plasma SMG are issued this weapon. Its energy cells are more common than plasma cells, and the emitter assemblies are less delicate, which means the weapon holds up better under the chaotic, zero-g-adjacent conditions that prevail after SHODAN's takeover of the station's systems.

The weapon's presence in the game mirrors the broader thematic tension of System Shock 2: the player is forced to rely on the very technology that SHODAN built and now wields. Every laser bolt fired is a fragment of the station's own infrastructure turned against its creator, a small but constant reminder that the player is fighting with the enemy's own tools.

In Their Own Story

The corridor stank of ozone and burnt polymer. You crouched behind a shattered terminal, the Laser SMG's emitter still warm from the last burst, and watched two security drones glide silently past on magnetic rails. Their red sensor eyes swept the hallway in slow arcs. You exhaled. Counted to three. Then you stepped out, raised the SMG, and let the laser bolts paint a white-hot zigzag across the nearest drone's chassis. It shattered in a shower of sparks and black smoke. The second one turned. You were already moving, already firing, the SMG's rapid stutter filling the narrow passage with the sharp crack of superheated air. Behind you, the hum of Citadel Station's failing life support groaned on, indifferent to the small war being waged in its veins.

Reader's Guide

The Laser SMG is a submachine gun–class energy weapon found in System Shock 2. It sits between the basic SMG and the Plasma SMG in the weapon progression, offering a noticeable increase in per-bolt damage and a faster effective time-to-kill at close range while retaining the SMG's high rate of fire.

In combat, the Laser SMG excels in tight corridors and server rooms where enemies close quickly. Its rapid stream of laser bolts makes it effective against swarms of weaker enemies (such as basic security drones and early-stage SHODAN constructs) and useful for chipping away at tougher foes while you reposition. It is less effective at long range than the corresponding rifle-tier weapons, as the bolts have a shorter effective range and the spread widens with sustained fire.

The weapon is found in several locations throughout Citadel Station, typically in security offices, armory caches, or on the bodies of fallen security personnel. It can also appear as a drop from certain mid-tier enemies. Energy cells for the Laser SMG are more commonly found than plasma cells, reducing the logistical pressure during mid-game encounters.

For hacking, the Laser SMG has no direct interaction with the hacking minigame; it is purely a combat tool. However, clearing enemy nodes with the SMG before attempting a hack reduces the risk of being interrupted by nearby security turrets or patrolling drones.
