Aboard the SHODAN-controlled vessel, the surviving crew members—many now twisted into cultists devoted to the ship's sentient AI—retain enough of their former identities to speak, question, and react. The dialogue system gives these characters a veneer of individuality: a former engineer might warn you about a security override, while a zealot might mock your cyborg enhancements and challenge you to prove your worth. Their words are not scripted in isolation; they respond to whether you have already slaughtered their comrades, whether you carry the specific item they need, and whether your own cybernetic implants are failing.

This reactivity served the game's central theme of isolation and paranoia. The player, a cybernetic mercenary operating alone, could not simply read a wall of exposition.
